A couple of days ago I was in LFS and asked the fish aisle manager what they had that was good for outdoors. He took me over to a tank with some "red shiners" (Notropis lutrensis). I remembered Flash talking about shiners and I wonder if these are the same ones? I bought four. http://www.scotcat.com/images/n_lutrensis2.jpg The ones I saw were more whitey, but that's probably just the stress of being in a shop. They didn't grab me as interesting, and I didn't really get the fact that they said I needed a clam as well! (I only buy dry goods from that store anyway, I don't trust their quarantine procedures - but they do get an interesting range). As I was buying the fish, the manager scooped out a female, looked at her from above, and realized her spine was crooked (probably from a net injury). He offered her to me for free. Otherwise he was going to feed her to one of the sal****er fish because that store won't knowingly sell damaged fish. As I said that I'd be happy to give her a home, I thought about the recent thread on rescuing fish. Guess I'm a soft touch too. Excellent! I have a powder blue cichlid in similar circumstances - the stripes on one side are odd, like there's a join - they stop and then restart at another angle, but fine on the other side of the body. It's quite able to swim and defend itself though. Lovely fish. -- Flash Wilson - Web Design & Mastery - 0870 401 4061 / 07939 579090 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Work: www.wdam.co.uk Personal: www.gorge.org |
