Default Should this group be moderated?

Hi,

for the last couple of weeks I fail to find fish-related discussions
amongst all the troll posts by fools, who feel that religious issues
need to be discussed not only in an inappropriate group, but also in a
totally inappropriate language.

I am tired of this nonsense, and probably many others are as well. Since
the pot-heads show no intention to leave on their own, we need to kick
them out. So I move that this group should be moderated, and any
non-related posts should be cleansed from the feed.

What do you think?

Engelbert

I don't see any religious discussions here, just the same profanity and
personal attacks by Roy using the Koi-Lo (and other people's) Nym. Everyone
turned against him because of these disgusting messages so he decided to
destroy this group and all the aquarium groups using "Koi-Lo" as his excuse.
It's not easy to get groups moderated I was told.

reposted from NexMax's original:

Due to users beyond our control, a group of regulars from
rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc created and moved to:
'The Freshwater Aquarium'.
http://groups.google.com/group/The-Freshwater-Aquarium

This is a 'lightly' moderated group, by members who volunteer to act as its
managers. They watch for, and delete any posts which are SPAM, grossly
inappropriate, or of an antisocial behaviour as has been seen in the Usenet
groups lately.

We also have members and managers from alt.aquaria,
alt.aquaria.tropical.fish.hobbist, rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants and
rec.ponds.

This group is open to anyone (new or old to the hobby) interested in
discussions regarding freshwater animals (fish, shrimps, snails etc), plants
and the operation of their set-ups (lighting, filters etc). The Google
interface is a little different, but the company is great.

I was told it's almost impossible to get a group moderated, and then who
will spend the time moderating it? Someone would have to read and approve
of every message. On a busy day that can be very time consuming and in time
very boring.

How about moderation that accepts all posts until a crisis happens?

I understand what you're saying but it's extremely difficult to get a group
moderated at all. I haven't looked into it myself. I'm going by what
someone from this group told me. Evidently they did look into it and chose
a Google forum instead.

The notion that moving to even a lightly moderated web based forum to
get away from the acromony and trolling is at best wishful thinking.

Learning how to filter out the riff-raff/trolls/gremlins is a better
solution. Getting away from broken newsreaders like Outlook Express is
an even better idea. Exercise your brain cells and learn how to use the
tools that are availalbe. Don't depend on some alturistic moderator to
protect you from the undesirables.

Moderators make me nervous because I have witnessed favoritism in the past.
If there's a disagreement they'll side with one group and alienate the other
side - you know what I mean. And you know who they'll ban!

Part of the difficulty people have in killfiling the main troll here is he
constantly uses the names of other posters, legitimate posters to do his
trolling. If they killfiled that name (nym) they killfiled the legitimate
poster as well. People don't want to to that. When not trolling us he
uses his own nym. Very slick troll. The other troll nym-shifts constantly
making it hard to avoid his posts.

I really don't like the moderated idea. Just looking for ideas. It
is strange that the troll is killing its golden geese. If everyone
leaves who can it screem at?
