Ok well I am new to the reef thing and I am just not sure as to what
filtration to use because I have been reading around and there is a bunch of diffurent setups to choose from my wife and I have been total freshwater up untill this point but we both know that if we are not patient it will cost alot more in the end so we are just trying to ask around and get diffurent inputs on what to do as far as the filtration goes, we have a 29 Gallon tank that we just emptied all of our freshwater out and were wanting to setup a reef tank but not sure what type of filtration to use some of the diffurent ideas that have been suggested where taking a Aqua Clear and gutting it to make it a refugian or using a emperor 400 and a protien skimmer or using a canister filter with a protien skimmer (looking around most if not all the canister filters are for big gallon tanks) so we are just wanting to get some advise of the most proficient setup for a 29 gallon tank thanks Jason "Steve" wrote in message ... For a reef you need plenty of mature live rock, and a reasonable skimmer, no more no less. Read about the Berlin method if you haven't already. Steve |

Jason Jason Just to follow up with what other people have said and to expand on some of it. For filtration on a reef tank the best way to go is with a natural filtration system. Use live rock and live sand as your primary filtration. With that there are no filter devices you need on the tank other than a protien skimmer. No emperor no canister just a skimmer. Now speaking of skimmers the RSB is not real bad skimmer but you can get ones a lot better for not much more money. Plus the Rio 2500 is to small to run it well if you end up with the RSB go for a mag 7 or mag 9.5 or a RIO 3100 to get max performance from the skimmer. A better skimmer in the same price range is the TurboFlotor T1000. It is available as in sump unit(better) or as the Multi which can be use as a hang on. On skimmers, do not skimp in this area get a good skimmer, and to make sure you get a good skimmer talk to as many people as you can most of the poplular skimmers from most LFS ar not very good. Some good affordable skimmers include the ASM skimmers, the Octopus skimmers, Euro Reef (but spendy) etc. If you are setting up a sump normally you can get a much more powerful in sump model for a lot less money than a hangon, sometimes you can save enough money to pay for a lot of your sump setup. Refugium. A refugium is not really a filter, but it adds to the natural filter system and is a great addition to any sal****er tank. To setup a refugium all you need is an area in your sump or another tank online your system or even an area in your main tank that you can grow some macro algea and allow the pods to grow without preditaion. Absolutely no filter at all, just use the rock. As I say if you read up Berlin you will see why filters are harmful in a reef, not helpful. Steve |
