Try rec.aquaria.marine.misc. UV steralisers aren't used on reef systems because it kills all the life in live rock. That's impossible. UV sterilizers kill some of the bacteria and protozoae in the water flowing past the bulb. They can't possible have any effect on anything living in the rest of the tank. George Patterson Coffee is only a way of stealing time that should by rights belong to your slightly older self. I have to say my live rock is thriving and I have just taken 2 TMC UV 30's off the system. Also, can you imagine a tank full of tangs (I have 1300 litres to play with and 8 tangs) without a UV unit? I spoke to Aqua-Medic yesterday (finally decided to ring them instead of waiting for them to reply to my email) and was told to try either an Fluval or Eheim hose as the hose I was using wasn't up to the job? The guy I spoke to recommended I try PTFE tape between the hose and the hosetail to reduce the gap, which I have to say I found a bit odd. Seems like another thing to get in the way and go wrong if you ask me. He also explained that the hosetails provided dont have 'teeth' on them to provide a greater surface area for the hose to grip on to, and his explanation for these 'teeth' on other hosetails was to provide better grip for hoses that require a jubilee clip to hold them in place. I don't know about anyone else, but I jubilee clip ALL my hoses, just to be sure they're not going anywhere! So, it's another trip to the LFS this weekend to find some alternate hoses and see how I get on. |

Some people use uv sterilizers on reef tanks, but most do
not because it kills the beneficial stuff in the water. And there are many filter feeders in the reef tank that feed on this.
