Two types of clowns which I'd like advice on!
1) Clown loach - mine have just started to do the "pretending to be dead" act. I have read this is typical loach behaviour, but is it because they are unhappy/happy/growing up/whatever? 2) Clown synodontis - I was given a 7" female three months ago. She hides all day and I never see her move! I've never seen her out when I've had to disturb the tank at night either. I leave food out, and it goes, but it could be the pleco taking it. Any advice on how much I should feed at night, or how I can be sure she is ok - other than the fact she isn't dead yet? Thanks, -- Flash Wilson -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- "I'm an advocate of sex before marriage. Otherwise I wouldn't have had any at all." |

They do it to be cool because they are a clown loach and they are not under stress. 2) Clown synodontis - I was given a 7" female three months ago. She hides all day and I never see her move! be dead" act. I have read this is typical loach behaviour, but is it because they are unhappy/happy/growing up/whatever? You should see a full tank of them, like 20 or so, then there will be three layers, which almost always the ones on top will be upside down, looking like they're dead... but they're always sleeping... I think they enjoy company, numbers, and the more you have, the better they feel, being more comfortable with larger numbers... that's why everyone says no less than 3... I say no less than 6, but I can't have that many... 2) Clown synodontis - I was given a 7" female three months ago. She hides all day and I never see her move! A friend has one.. very skittish fish... not comfortable in any tank less than the 55... and even then when she was put in a 90, still never came out.... but after 2 months, it died... not sure why... |

As near as I can figure, it's because they are INSANE. Generally with my
guys it seems to precede bursts of manic activity, so maybe it's like naptime in nursery school? My red tails are the same way. They really do make me laugh when they are about. And what is really cool about them is that they are awake during the day and I can enjoy them. They remind me of my ferrets, they play hard and then seem to fall asleep where ever they get tired. Saw one sleeping half in and out of my ship decoration yesterday. Vicki |

From 6am-7pm, they'll play around the tank, at almost exactly 7pm, they're sound asleep. Can shine a flashlight at them or whatever and they won't wake up. When they were in their 30g tank a while back, they had their home in a log where they slept. Intro'd a pim cat to the tank, and he claimed the log, clowns had to move out. Every night between 7-7:30pm, they'd pile one on top of the other in one corner, on their sides. I've since moved them to a 90 with lots of hiding places, so don't see their sleeping habits anymore, but theirs still one that'll put on a show late at night, around 11pm he'll wake up and zoom around the tank until the lights go out. As I write this, it's 2am, crazy guy's at the top of the tank schooling with the Bala's. |
