Default Alge

This is my 3rd year for having my pond, small 5 x 4 foot, 36inch in the
deep end, 18inch in shallow.

the first year I had clear water, running a UV filter, no alge what so
ever, the second year still running the uv filter, the water is clear, but
alge is now on the sides and rocks of the pond (im talking long strands of
alge) , now the 3rd year and I still have the alge with clear water.

How do I get rid of this alge and keep it from coming back.

I do have fish and no plants in the water.

The only filter I have is a large sponge attached to my pump.

The pond does get sun.

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Oh.. I have other friends who also seem to have this problem which started
last year also, and they look to me to solve their problems also.

Any suggestions ?

UV will not do anything for string algae

Plants do help (the floating type with roots hanging down ( water hyacinth,
water lettuce) - they also help to provide shade (another big plus for
filamentous algae ) - you shoud have ~70% water coverage for shade such as
floating plants or lily pads to starve the stringy ( filamentous ) algae for
sunlight

The only filter I have is a large sponge attached to my pump.

A bio filter will work better for you, depending on pond size to keep your
water parameters better

Hi Joel,

If you have "been away" from this newsgroup (rec.ponds) since
last fall, please be aware that a lot has changed.

I would like to mention that a new ponding group has been formed
(just over a month ago.) Its called rec.ponds.moderated.
Most of the ponders have moved over to that group, although a few
still stop in here.

You might get an answer here, but you're more likely to get a lot
of good info/help over at the new group. It is moderated, and only
permits friendly, on-topic discussions. No trolling, abuse, etc.

I see that you use astraweb. I just checked their usenet website,
and confirmed that they are not yet carrying rec.ponds.moderated.

If you go to
www.news.astraweb.com, you will see on the left side of
the page a link to request the addition of a newsgroup.
You might want to request astraweb to add
rec.ponds.moderated. Most news providers are now carrying r.p.m and
I am more than a little surprised that astraweb is not yet carrying
it.
When you email them, you might also mention to them that it is
a moderated group.

As a last resort, you can subscribe to r.p.m through google
groups. However, I personally think the google newsgroups interface
leaves a lot to be desired.

If astraweb is not responsive to you as an individual, please
let me know. I believe that there is a way for the Big8.org to
contact them and put a strong word in. Big8.org administers the
creation of newsgroups in 8 of the major hierarchies of usenet.

Rec.ponds and rec.ponds.moderated now co-exist side by side. You
can post to both groups separately, but the rules of r.p.m do not
permit crossposting directly between the two groups. R.P.M is
moderated in order to ensure that only friendly, on-topic discussion
appears.

If you wish, let me know how you make out with astraweb.

I'm also going to monitor it on my own, and contact the Big8 if
necessary.
(I was the proponent who helped get rec.ponds.moderated created
last month through Big8.)

Oh yeah Joel, I'm also from Canada - 35 mi. east of Windsor, in fact, just
down the '401' from you - rec.ponds.moderated is a better place for your
questions - this newsgroup is pretty well euchered and the new one is just
as easy to use - you won't see the difference, other than no garbage
