mosquitoes

Do garden ponds provide a breeding area for mosquitoes? Are there
chemicals to control this; if so, do these chemicals harm fish? Thanks.

Buy mosquito dunks (harmless to fish) or keep a few inexpensive goldfish or
rosy reds in your pond.

Mosquito dunks are perfectly fine to use. No problems. If your able to
toss in a few fish that would be better yet. Usually if there is
sufficient surface disturbance, mosquitos will not pick that place to
lay eggs at. however there is usually some area on a poind somewhere
that is perfectly suitable. But Dunks work fine as does fish. We keep
our indoors tropicals outside in preforms and water features from
April to late November, and never have had a mosquito breeding ground.
Come winter or cooler months the tropicals are moved back inside,
until its warm outside again (usually a 2 or 3 month time frame at
most) so we have always used fish to control mosquitos not dunks.

Eco labs make serveral products that will not harm your fish but will
prevent mosquitoes from hatching. You can find mosquito dunks,
mosquito bits hide a dunks and Liquid Biological Control at

If you have any standing water I would recommend using the bits or
dunks. If you have a few fish they will eat quite a few bugs as a
snack. Good water circulation will also help.
