Default I got thunderbird working...I think

ok, i saw the place that had the info on that on the website faq's
and i did check on always authenticate, but its not asking me for a
password, all i have is the refresh button on the subscribe window, it
just keeps showing the default 2. i also tried to add a smtp server
with the info on it too, and configured t-bird to use that for
outgoing, guess that wasn't going to help. i closed the prog down,
that didnt help, i looked everywhere for a place to put a password but
t-bird usually just prompts for it. could i be putting in something
wrong in the email location, in the server settings, or do i just need
to wait for some time? wierd..

ok, it was my bad, i had my t-bird address book opened the whole time,
so no matter how many times i closed down t-bird, it didnt have time
to initiate the authenticate. once i shut down my address book, and
repopened t-bird, viola, it prompted me for the username then the
password.

see ya on the flipside

Oh, I should admit that windows has gotten much better. I still think
the user interface stinks, but the quality and security has improved
dramatically. It still boggles the mind why something as simple as a
firewall was so difficult for MS to add into their systems and would
have saved businesses world-wide billions of dollars.

I think my impressions were formed a few years ago where I'd be working
happily on my Linux laptop while the latest MS security gaff was being
exploited by internet worms. I also refused to support the platform
because I didn't enjoy being woken up at 2 in the morning to figure out
why a Windows server is circling the drain again. Just
self-preservation and self-interest at work, so I suppose that is
distorted as their are other ways to view the utility of the platform.

Although I commend MS for fixing their issues, I still don't trust the
machines. If it has windows and is attached to the internet, I assume
the machine is dirty. MS software hasn't been scrutinized by the world
of developers, so I just have to assume that their are more security
gaffs waiting to be exploited. Perhaps I'm overly cautious, but then
again, judging by past performance, maybe not.

As for the User interface, I feel like I'm riding around on a squeaky
tricycle with my knees up around my ears. I've only recently (last
night) started using Vista, so the jury is out on that one. Nice eye
candy, but I'm more concerned about productivity and performance.

I've never owned an Apple as I'm always turned away by sticker shock and
that they reorganized the unix file system. I can't make any comments
on them other then they have some nice eye candy on their UI. Not sure
how useful it is, but some of my friends seem to enjoy it.

Sorry, for posting off topic. I'll let it die.

Here's how to get it working:

Tools - Account Settings - Server Settings
Always request authentication when connecting to
this server
Next line down, click on browse.
Right click on news.server address and open with
notepad.
At the bottom of the file ad 3 lines of gobly-goop,
and save and close
the file
This will then cause Thunderbird to ask for a
correct screen name and
password to replace the gobly-goop.
