Default rec.aquaria.freshwater access through Google Groups

I don't know how many people access newsgroups through Google Groups,
but it seems Google Groups neither gets updates, nor lets you post to
rec.aquaria.freshwater. Should I stop using this group and just stick
to rec.aquarua.freshwater.misc?

Interesting. I was wondering why there seemed to be more traffic in this
group.

Yeah, I can't even see anything I posted in the last week from Google
Groups. The last post they have is from 2005.

With Time-Warner taking away UseNet completely, a lot of people will
only have Usenet access through Google Groups.

I use FREE news servers. Try http://www.albasani.net for sign up. Of
course, you will need a news reader to use them. I use Thunderbird by
Mozilla, or you can use the one which comes with windows.

Using google groups to access news groups sucks! I think you will agree
if you get used to using a real news group reader ...

Oh, I use either Pan at home or Thunderbird. At work, is another story.
Firewall blocks my ability to do any of that, so my only choice is
something like Google Groups.

Google Groups is better than nothing. If there was a newsreader that
went through an HTTP proxy, it would work, and I would be happy.

Well, such software is certainly available. Here is one example:

However, if I were you, I would be inclined to use Google and search for
a freeware, or at least a shareware, version.

Not so. I access Usenet through several FREE news-servers such as aioe,
motzerella, greatnowhere and others. I hate Google Groups.

I understand there are free Usenet servers available but there are two
issues:

1. The average Time-Warner customer has to actually KNOW about Usenet in
order to try and find a free news server. Usenet is kind of lost and
forgotten these days. And now that Usenet is gone from Time-Warner, I
doubt there will be any reference to the existence of Usenet on
Time-Warner's support site.

2. Free Usenet services still require an NNTP client, which can't get to
the server at work when you're behind a firewall and proxy.

I used to use a website that would give a forum web interface to
Novell's Usenet newsgroups. If I could find that software, I'd set it
up for the rec.aquaria hierarchy. I really don't want to see newsgroups
die.

=====================
Usenet wont die because of Time-Warner. Many other ISPs still carry Usenet
and many people access it with either free or pay news servers.
