Hello Elliott, It may be sponges that are growing. A LFS near me gets in liverock pieces which have been out of water. After a while small white sponges form. I bought a small rock to see whether they will colour-up (with zoo's). Just to give you some idea of the stupid prices we have to pay in England, the LFS sells this rock at £6/lb (say U.S. $ 10/lb.)
