Default compatibility jewel/johanni

I have a jewel and an electric blue johanni, both about 2 inches long,
living together and the jewel gets beat up once in a while but overall they
have survived together for a couple of months.

Recently I bought 2 more jewel cichlids about 1.5 inches long and the
electric blue was furious and would not rest until they were killed, so I
took out the new jewels and put them in an emergency tank, they are
recovered now.

So, are these two species very incompatible? What are good friends for my
electric blue and should I just have a tank dedicated to the jewel cichlids
given that they seem to be weaklings or can they also have friends of other
species?

Thanks for any advice on this. Sleddog.

The Johanni is the most aggressive fish here...Take him out, and put the new
jewels in., Give them a week, then put the johanni back in..should be a little
fighting, but nothing too bad,

Jewels are usually a very aggressive species. So are johanni... You don't
mention the size of your tank, but it sounds like its too small. Your
johanni has claimed most of the tank for himself, and he won't give it up
easy.. you'd be better off keeping the jewels separate and going w/ other
malawi cichlids w/ the johanni. Post your tank parameters, and we can get a
better idea of what is compatible.

Madd Hatter, thanks for your reply, i have a 20 and a 10 gallon tank. Both
have small gravel and some large rocks, also i have some plants (anarchis i
think). The johanni likes to hide a lot in the rocks, but the jewel stays
out floating most of the time.

Thanks Rick. I actually took out the jewel that lived with the johanni and
put it in with my 2 other jewels and got its as* kicked, eventhough its
bigger than them, so back it went with the johanni. I wonder if its too
much stress to switch tanks on the fish 2 times in a day, it looked
stressed and i had to give it a good chase to catch it each time.

I will try what you say, i guess its a way of "de-throning" the johanni?
