I have just seen a beautiful little cichlid, body purplish in colour, yellow
fins, (dorsal especially) , and blue eyes. Shape much like a convict. The shop says it's a red head cichlid, A quick google search showed pictures of adult fish that looked totally different. The fish I saw was 3-4 cm long. Are they correct? and if so would they be OK with Firemouths, Blue Acaras and a Green Terror female? Again my search re behaviour gave differing views on temperament Thanks Leong |

Cichlasoma synspilum, or Vieja synspila http://biological-diversity.info/Fish_freshw.htm http://filaman.uni-kiel.de/Country/C...m?Country=Beli ze&Genus=Vieja&Species=synspila However, if it's a hybrid, then temperament prediction will likely not be very reliable. That's the nature of hybrids (what little 'nature' they have in them ;~). NetMax |

From Mid_South Cichlids...
Red Head Cichlid (Leong=A0Goh) I have just seen a beautiful little cichlid, body purplish in colour, yellow fins, (dorsal especially) , and blue eyes. Shape much like a convict. The shop says it's a red head cichlid, A quick google search showed pictures of adult fish that looked totally different. The fish I saw was 3-4 cm long. Are they correct? A lot of shops have all kinds of names for their cichlids, that another shop may call a whle other species by the same name. I sell cichlids from a "home based" business, but don't come across anything "red head". Too my top of my head knowledge, your fish is likely Malawian. I have some names, but these are not really purple, but can "appear" purplish viewing in a tank. As Net Max stated, try finding out the scientific name, if possible. Some that come to mind, that have known yellow fins, & are dark or"appear" purplish a (old school scientific names) Labeotropheus Trewavasae (Zimbawe Rock), Otopharynx (mumbo) (yellow stripe on head however) Otopharynx Lithobates or maybe... Cynotilapia "Mbamba" and if so would they be OK with Firemouths, Blue Acaras and a Green Terror female? Again my search re behaviour gave differing views on temperament Thanks Leong In "my" past experiences, I don't deal with Firemouths, Green Terrors, and such anymore.. but when I first got into the hobby, my cichlids ripped these type fish apart. |

I recently bought a fish called a Red-Top chichlid, th belive (off the
top of my head) that is called Labidochromis Sp. 'Hongi'. From the info I can find it seemas to vary in colours, manly a blue body with yellow fins. The male has a red stripe along the top of its head. My LFS had a nice adult male in thier display tank, but my juviniles are a nice shade of grey/brown with just the 1st few scales starting to show blue around the gills. |

Thanks for all the replies. It does look like Archocentrus Sajica to me. I
was able to take some photos of it and have posted them here. www.pakurangadental.co.nz/Leong/ID.htm Is this A Sajica or a juvenile "red head cichlid" (C.Synspilum)? Leong "Mark" wrote in message ...
