Default smells like hot grabage

So I happen to another tank ..... that I am going to use for a hospital or
feeder tank.
so I pulled out some gravel from my big tank (55) becuase even though I have
live plants I got WAY to much gravel in there....
So I take enough out for the small tank and set it up. and re-setup my large
tank. well even with the filtration I have on there (whipser 40, Penguin
170, and a powerhead 402 with the quick filter attachment) my water is
starting to smell like $%^, So I have done a water change and a carbon
change. that helped some but it still smells really bad.

I guess there has been anearobic bacteria building up under all that gravel.
If you poke through the rest of the gravel, do air bubbles come out? If
they do, that gas would be hydrogen sulphide.

"Hydrogen Sulphide, A very toxic and smelly gas, that is formed in anaerobic
conditions, i.e when the gravel is to deep and contains a lot of waste. A
classic sign for it is a bad egg smell and in more serious cases the gravel
will turn black."
