hau kolas..while removing some snails eggs from my cichlid tank, was
suprised to find what appears to be fish eggs and 2 free swimming fry hiding in a corner together..the question is this..as far as i know the only females in the tank a 1) what was sold to me as haplochromis obliquidens is actually "sp. zebra" or astatotilapia latifasciata 2)Protomelas taeniolatus "Red Empress". Her male has established himself as the current dominant fish in the tank, and has had a ramp-up of aggression and coloration in the last few weeks. In either case, everything I've seen says these are mouth brooders. The fry and eggs are unattended and undefended. A male albino red top afra was laying off the plants both fry and eggs were hidden in, apparently predating the fry. So here's my questions, this being my first (and unexpected) spawning of africans..go with the obvious culprit as far as fatherhood? How apt are haps to crossbreeding sucessfully? I'm suspeting the 2 freeswimmers are the sole survivors of the brood; also managed to locate about 6 eggs; which I'm assuming were abandoned or infertile? What signs tell the tale? Can anyone point me to some decent info sites on these fish? most of what I can find are pictures etc. Sorry, i do not have a camera for pics of the fry or eggs. TIA for any light that you can shed. lila pilamaya **FREE PELTIER NOW!!** |
