![]() "Jonathan Wood" wrote in message link.net... I have a wild fish (bluegill) that was caught with a fishing pole and hook. It's been doing okay in my tank (eating and behavior), but the hook sores above its mouth have now caused a swelling in one side of its nose. It looks to me like some sort of infection. My water isn't great (nitrates are pretty high--I'm doing some water changes but have had some trouble) but the other fish seem to be doing fine. I was just wondering if it's possible to administer antibiotics to this fish, and if they can be purchased without going to a vet. Thanks for any tips! jk,
Throw him back in, and let nature decide. Well, first of all, it wasn't nature that caught him on a hook, and second, I'd like to keep him (along with my other wild-caught fish). Jonathan |

Jonathan Jonathan if this has a whitish appearance it is likely a fungal infection. You can net the fish and while gently holding the fish in the net apply some meth. blue or other anti fungal medication directly to the spot uisng a q tip. Rick |

Rick,
Jonathan if this has a whitish appearance it is likely a fungal infection. You can net the fish and while gently holding the fish in the net apply some meth. blue or other anti fungal medication directly to the spot uisng a q tip. Although a little secondary fungus appears to be showing up, most of it appears to be internal swelling. So I don't think dealing with the fungus would take care of the problem. Thanks. Jonathan |

Rick,
they are a very hardy fish and it will likely be fine. I have a dozen Lepomis megalotis (longear sunfish) at the moment in a cold water tank. I've seen photos of those that look awesome. I had a few green sunfish, which are local, but they don't have longear sunfish in my area (Salt Lake City, UT). I've always thought longear sunfish would be really cool! Jonathan |

Jonathan ive got one that i caught as a baby in a minnow trap that i catch food for my snapping turtle. that was a year ago. the turtle wont eat it! ive had another "pet" for the past year. i guess the turtle would rather be in the tank with my cichlids that he stares at all day. i guess they look like they taste better. the sunfish is pretty cool tho. has as much personality as my cichlids. |
