Default DIY yeast CO2 problem

Hey, all,

Just wanted to see if anyone else out there has had this problem and might be
able to help. I have a 120 gallon tank with DIY CO2 injected into the filter
pickup. Problem is, my CO2 production is extremely low... Like 1 bubble per 3
minutes. The first batch I ran on this tank kicked butt to the tune of a
bubble every 2 seconds for two weeks, but to date all successive batches have
been duds. I tried adding baking soda, but it didn't help at all. In fact,
that batch was probably the worst to date. I cant seem to get this stuff going
well. I use a 1 gallon gatorade jug with 3.5 cups of sugar and half a tbs of
Fleishmann's active dry yeast. Can anyone figure out what's causing this
problem?

Thanks in advance!

Default DIY yeast CO2 problem

Hey Matt

Thoroughly check the bottle and lines for airleaks, especially where the
tube goes through the bottle lid. We have a product over here called
Prestick, looks like gum and is used for sticking up posters etc, a nice
glob of this wrapped around the tube entering the bottle top works well.

If you don't have leaks then your yeast has probably gone off! Yes, it has a
shelf life, buy fresh yeast, keep the packet in the fridge once opened, you
can roll it up and seal it with a clothes peg so no air gets in
.........another thing, don't use boiling water, this can kill the yeast
culture.

My first guess would be the yeast. Is it fresh (not expired).

Forget about boiling, at anything over 105 degrees or so you'll kill the
yeast.

Also check your room temperature, my CO2 production decreases over the
Winter months for this reason. Yeast likes to live in water of about blood
temperature or just below.

The room is usually at 75-80 degrees. You think if I put the mix next to my
filter pump it'll produce more CO2? I sure hope so. At this rate I'll need 5
bottles to make a barely adequate amount of gas. And these are 1 gallon jugs!

Unless you have a lot of time to spare, I seriously think that the
pressurized bottle is the way to go for a 120 gal tank. And you probably
need a very effective reactor as well.

Cheers
Kenneth

I just don't have extra cash to blow on that kind of hardware. I'd like to,
but it's just not in the cards.

If you consider that a plonkable offense, you probably should
reconsider spending any more time on Usenet, as your skin is far too
thin.
