You mix it up in advance and let it settle overnight, then siphon out the fluid
between the top layer of crud and the bottom layer of silt. All of that (the silt and the crud) is thrown out, and the rest is ready for the tank. Be very careful with it. It must be dripped in very very slowly, to replace only the water that has evaporated. If too much is added to your tank at once, it can even kill everything. (That is the *worst* case senario.) I've tried using it for a couple of days myself, but decided it wasn't worth the risk. With a dosing pump, it is a safer option.
