Jo, what size tank do you have, what are the water parameters (ammonia, nitrite,
nitrate, ph)?
How often do you do a water change? Do you have a filter and an airstone??

These questions might help us give a possible explanation.

I don't have a clue about the ammonia, nitrate or ph levels. I have a
filter and an airstone. I change 1/ of the water every 6 monhs (as
instructed by the shop i bought tank and fish from). When i change the
water i treat it the new water before i add it with "Tetraaqua Aquasafe"
which apparently neutralises all harmful chemicals (chlorine and metal ions)

The size of the tank, again i don't know exactly but apparently (according
to the shop) can house 5 goldfish happily.

The white fish seems quite happy but i am concerned about the missing chuck
of scales

thanks again

You need an ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH tester.

Also can you give the measurements of the tank (preferably in inches)
and we will tell you how much your tank holds.

ok you have a tank size of about 3.6us Gallons - you are massively overstocked.
You
shouldn't even stock 1 goldfish, let alone 2. Rule of thumb is 10us gallons per
goldfish. You should address this. I imagine your fish aren't happy and have
been
subjected to ammonia/nitrite/nitrate poisoning as well as oxygen starvation.

You should consider correcting this.

Optomist's view - Honest ignorace on the part of Local Fish Store (LFS) to
keeping Goldfish.
Cynic's view - Bad LFS sells more gear, meds & fish while inexperienced
newbie kills fish & catches up.
But I reamin an optomist!

i will get a new tank this weekend.

Good call - 3.6 Gal really is too small
you sound determined so here comes a bunch of advise ;-)

First, find a new LFS!
Then, for 2 GF I suggest you start with:
a no-frills, bare bottom 20G tank (2 options here, 20G long is better than
20G tall)
Use no gravel, castles, fake plants, etc. - a hood & light should come with
the tank but a solid stand is extra.
also get an oversized power filter with biowheel - like a penguin 330 (gph),
and an airpump w/ bubble wand,
and a heater (75W min) & thermometer (to monitor & keep stable 76F temp)
and a tank siphon (AKA gravel vacuum)
and a Dechlorinator (e.g. StressCoat) and an Ammonia locker (e.g. AmmoLock)
And test kits for ammonia, nitrIte and pH at first & later nitraTe.
& 2 plastic 4 Gallon (dedicated, fish only) buckets and a set of plastic
measuring spoons (no metal) from a grocery store.

To understand the nitrogen cycle, importance of test kits, Stress-Coat,
Ammo-Lock, etc, please read this
http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html

And see if LFS sells SeaChem "Ammonia Alert", else see
http://www.thatpetplace.com/MainPro/shopay00.aspx

Then expect to do frequent water changes, daily at first while the new tank
cycles.
.... Unless you can find some Marineland Biospira (highly recommended) &
avoid all that.

And so it begins -
Good luck & welcome to the club!

Adding onto Matts post, if you want to keep all 5 goldies, try getting a
50gallon
tank if possible, if not, then consider giving some of your goldies away to
friends
that know how to look after them or someone with a pond.
