plant for goldfish

Good god no! They`re part of the family now. they`ll be the last too go,
after the missus and the dogs...

Well a fully nice planted aquarium and goldfish make not a nice
combination, so better buy the most realistic plastic plants you can get
and spoil your fish with some nice salad every now and then...

Mabey a second tank with tetra's and many plants.......

I absolutely second the java moss suggestion. Its tough, takes a wide range
of water parameters, can tolerate a little salt (in case you ever need to
salt your tank) and my goldfish love it (but not in a meal sort of way, more
in a furniture sort of way). I imagine it would be a good thing to use for
a spawning mop, since it doesn't root, so once eggs were laid you could just
grab the whole bunch and move it to another tank.

I have some pothos and the philodendrons that I had cuttings of. Once they got
some roots on them, I bunched them, tied them with copper wire (what I had
handy) and attached them to a suction cup on the side. They basically lay
across the top of the water, with some of it submerged. They have since
sprouted more leaves and the roots are growing all over the place... The fish
have nibbled a little at one leaf, and like to suck a little on the long roots
(probably think it's a tasty worm), but otherwise just leave it alone. We had
nasty trubs with the tank levels last year, but once I got the gravel out and
replaced it with marbles, and got the live plants in, the levels are pretty
liveable now... See Ingird's page for more plant hints...

I have a 50 gal L with 6 fancy GF - I keep the tank bare and bare bottom and
use the backing paper which has pictures of plants! - reason ? - there is
nothing there to accumulate detritus. GF are extremely messy - so watch out!
For interest in the tank - I use a lighthouse - air bubbler

Monstera is not really a philodendron but is a species unto itself so you
were right just calling it Monstera. It will be too big for the aquarium.

They are speaking about the hanging basket philodendron that is typically
variegated with cream and green or just plain green. You see it in lots of
restaurants or other darkly lit buildings due to its shade tolerance and
ease of culture. Cuttings can be taken and rooted in a glass of water and I
guess people use them in aquariums although I have no experience here.

i already have a 6 foot philodendron monstera, i always knew of it as just
monstera... so how to i plant it in the tank? just drop the tendril thingies
into the water? right now its about 10 inches from my tank so its not a
major prob...

This was a while ago now but... The monstera did really well in the tank, it
grew like crazy and new leaves now appear every month or so - instead of the
three months it took in a pot. The fry like darting in and out of the roots.
In fact i had one monstera left outside and it got badly burned and lost all
of its leaves, I chopped up what was left and left the pieces with bits of
air root in the tank and they all started growing with fresh new leaves. Oh,
and theres some growing in my pond too.

Different goldfish have different eating habits n behaviours because
my GF do not eat my plants at all. I have elodia n a java fern. The
algae for me is more of a threat to the plants than my goldfish.
