Default White spot on goldfish's head and white deposits on aquiarium lid

I have two small 2" golfish in a tank with a filter which have been
perfectly healthy for the last 2 years.
Just yesterday, I noticed that the larger of the fish had a white
spot on it's head and this morning I also noticed a white chalky
deposit on the inside of the plastic lid of the tank.
I am assuming that these two facts are related - I will be cleaning
the tank tonight and would like to find out whether there was anything
wrong with the water (I change half the water every month and the
filter cartridges are regularly changed).

Thanks in advance
