2 Sumps on one tank?

Hello,

I currently have a 75 g with a 30g sump.
I have two Lifereef overflows and two Iwaki MD 20RLxt Pumps.

I would like to run another sump to add volume to the system with my other
( 3rd ) Iwaki pump.
Every scenerio that I can think of has a drawback.

Has anyone here done this before ?

Hi Dave
You can have a few of them. I often use small tanks as extensions to my
sump by boring holes in both sides of the small tanks to accept the same
fittings as used in for the output of my sump. I connect the sump and
the extra tank(s) together via pipe fittings and attach the pump to the
last tank in the series to return the water to my show tank.

You can keep some nice macro algae or whatever in these sump extensions
also if you like. I;ve done that.

Yes, lots of people are doing it right now. Put a deep sand bed and some
macro algae in the other sump and you've got yourself a nitrate-reducing
refugium.

Yes! I have my reef tank upstairs. In the basement I have the tank return
split to a 12 gal sump and a 22 gal DSB/refugium. The water from the
refugium drains back to the sump to get pumped out again to the tanks. I
have heater, skimmer,top off float, and return from calcium reactor all in
the sump. I also have a 55 gal FOwLR in the basement that is also in line
with the same system. Make sure your lowest level tank is large enough to
hold the back flow when the pumps are turned off.
