Just wondering if rec.ponds ever does a roll call every now and then?

Just to see where everyone is from and what other interests and hobbies
they may have?

already had it in my blood but this group set it off. Got loveing wife
step son and daughter all thought that I had lost my mind when I
started digging up the pheasant pen. I was going to get more pheasants

JD, here. 57. Been ponding since '90. Have two ponds, one ~1,000 gal and
one, recently redone trying the bog gravel filter idea in the pond, ~ 1300
gal. Seems to be working fine. Granbury, TX is home. Been in nuclear power
since '66. Four grown kids, six grandkids and Max, our Schnauzer. Have
converted two of the kids to Schnauzers but haven't porged them, yet. DW
tolerates the ponds, enjoys the pool more. I recently built a deck around
one of the ponds so she is enjoying them more, lately. She has just been
diagnosed with BC, so your prayers would be appreciated and would help.

Janet in Niagara Falls, Canada here. Married to a wonderful guy for 16 years
now. We have 3 great kids, 15,12 and 9 that love the ponds and fish.
Currently our setup is a 200 gallon top pond-veggie filter that feeds a 35
foot winding stream coming down a hill. It empties into a 300 gallon bottom
pond filled with plants and comets. Currently we are getting motivated to
dig some more and almost triple the size of the lower pond. (Think good
Niagara Clay! Yuck!) Some day I'll have my koi pond but that can't happen
until the kids are done with the pool! ;o) We've been at this property only
3 summers so I figure we're doing good considering there was nothing in the
backyard but a pool and gravel. Now we have stone walls, retaining walls and
lots of wooden decks. The other project that is supposed to get done this
summer is to cut a 10'x19' patio into the remaining hill. Last property was
a farm complete with cows, geese, etc. I had a wonderful clay bottom pond
that was probably close on 10,000 gallons. We stocked it with koi but sadly
left them behind when we moved.

The only real hobby here is gardening, ponding and supervising pool use in
the summer. Winter, well it's reading everything I can get my hands on. )
Just one crazy dog here now, a jack-a-poo who thinks that anything floating
in the lower pond is fair game. Ever see a 8 pound dog patiently wait for a
WH to float close enough to gracefully lift it out of the pond that proceed
to attack it and rip it to shreads? LOL! He thinks the fish are his pets and
partakes in "fish kisses" every night. The Manx tomcat has absolutely no use
for the ponds or fish after falling in last summer! D

Hey!
Maureen in Phila here. Previously for years and years and years, worked in the
Neonatal ICU as a transport RN. Now working OB/GYN in a clinic in the city.
Loveit. Love stainedglass, and any glass actually....Took care of my parents
for years, now standing behind my little sister who has breast cancer....cancer
sucks.
My un-also-ex-significant other dug my pond for me, about 5 years ago, and I
have never regretted it. Love a bottle of $12 merlot, guinness, and hot
coffee....by the pond if possible, with a friend is preferable.
My three sons are grown, one is out in Utah in the AirForce. I have 1 and 1/2
cats (car accident wiped out a good portion of whitematter in the 1/2 cat) one
cocker spaniel, and an african gray parrot that says and mimics EVERYTHING.....

Default Rec.ponds Roll Call?

I got started with ponding after my DW saw my sister's ponds and stream that
they added to their back yard. Until then, I had 1/2 acre of grass to cut
with no obstructions. Went to one of the big box stores and bought a 220
gallon preform, brought it home tied to the top of the car. Didn't get it
off the car and found out one of the local pond and garden centers had them
1/2 price, so took it back and went to the p&g and got two preform ponds.
Set them up in sight of the dining room window. Hads gorgeous plants, about
20 koi, 10 catfish, 3 big goldfish and lots of little goldfish. End of
season, got rid of all but one catfish and all baby goldfish. Next year
realized koi cannot turn around in preform ponds so built a big liner pond,
about 1500 gallons, with waterfall running into the first of the two preform
ponds and then into the other and pumped back. On year 4 the preform ponds
split and the koi started getting sick from overcrowding, so took out the
preform ponds and built a new pond bigger than big, 4000 gallons. Every
year since the filters have been enlarged to keep up with the growth of the
koi. Year 6 or 7 the 1500 gallon pond went through a raising of the sides
to enlarge it to about 2500 gallons. Last week it finally got its bead
filter system.

DW and I have lived in this house for 31 years, one son, just returned from
3rd tour in Afghanistan with SF. He has two daughters that live close. One
daughter, a biology teacher, has two daughters. DW has played daycare for
each of the granddaughters. I retired as a concrete materials engineer with
Virginia DOT 3 years ago, but continue to teach concrete technology 3 days a
month.

We have belonged to the local water garden club, with me serving 3 years as
president, DW is now serving 3rd year as president, and I am the editor of
the newsletter. We also belong to Mid-Atlantic Koi Club, and we just
entered our first show.

We also have numerous flower gardens, mostly wild flowers or near wild
flowers, though there are roses, peonies, dahlias, butterfly bushes, iris,
daylilies, pitcher plants, bog orchids, and several japanese maples within
some of the beds. Between the ponds, flower beds, grandkids, and rec.ponds,
I stay busy.

Well I dont know if they do or not but here's me. I was an Air Force brat,
have lived in or around Austin since 1970 where I attended UT. We bought
this house in late October and my obsession with ponds began when I
unboarded this mysterious hole in the ground. At the same time I moved my
one man print shop into our garage, hence the posts any time of the day.
Can you tell it's been a slow day? I'm 52 going on 18 and some of my
interests include my wife, picking up our 20 month old granddaughter every
other weekend (what an unadultered joy!), fixing up our yard and home,
setting up an aquarium, baseball card collecting, spending time with my

two
grown kids and immediate family - all whom live between here and San
Antonio, learning more and more not to sweat the small stuff, taking time

to
smell the roses (we have 8 bushes) and appreciate all the people I am
fortunate enough to know, including my growing family here-not necessarily
in that order. I am quite spiritual though not particularly religious. I
love humor. My best friend died the same week we closed on the house and
there was so much I didnt do or tell him. I wont let that happen again.

So
here goes - "I love you guys". Oh wait, that's a beer commercial and I

dont
drink.

Hello - this is Jacqui in Hamilton, Ontario. I've had a small pond for
about 5 summers now. Lucky me, it came with our house!! I've got a great
hubby who gamely helps me tackle all "our" projects and 3 sweet little
girls... hoping to adopt a 4th in a couple of years (need a bigger house
first!).

My pond is currently about 300 gal and I'm hoping this summer to use only
biological filtration, nothing mechanical. I have a basset hound with a
fondness for extension cords, so we want to keep her safe. I'm stocking up
on watercress & water chestnuts from the Asian Grocery near us & got a ton
of hornwort from my mom's pond. We have a few goldfish, mostly rescues
from the feeder fish tanks at Petsmart - a treasure trove if you care to
take a chance.

Other hobbies... pottery, reading, collecting My Little Ponies, researching
all things Chinese, trying to get my kids to eat vegetables, cooking and
shopping.

Jacqui
