Hi
I am new to the newsgroup and have recently purchased a tank. I have had very little experience with aquariums apart from keeping a couple of goldfish in a bowl as a child. We recently purchased a 29lite tank with a build in water filter...carbon and wool. When we bought it the lady in the shop said that it could hold the anticipated 8 goldfish we wanted to purchase. 8 red comets approx 4 to 5cm long. They have been managing for a month ok. ...so I added a couple of small blackmores. A week later I have noticed that they fish look as if they a gulping all the time. Not enough oxygen in the water ? I have three oxy weed plants. I just noticed today also that the comets have red around the gills....not enough oxygen in the water ? I also noticed that two of the fish ....dorsel fins are sometimes flat. Today I did a water change...since a week ago. I also purchased an airstone. My questions 1 How many goldfish should I have max for a 29 litre tank ? 2 Now that I have 10 fish ...I am considering getting a bigger tank. What size tank do you recomend. 3 I have seen a very nice Juwel vision 180 litre tank, which looks very nice. inbuild filter. Would it be big enough for the 10 fish and has anyone had any experiences with the Juwel tanks ie filter systems Looking forward to your replies. Hi NZed,
Your tank is way too small for the ammount of fish you're housing in it....it would be very wise to get a bigger tank ASAP....remember that goldfish are very dirty fish and need around 30L of water per fish because of the ammount of waster they produce! You can even stunt their growth if they are kept in crowded condidtions!! ...You are right about there not being enough oxygen in the water...fish tend to gasp for air when the water isnt oxygenated properly....what are your water parameters like PH, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites? If you dont have these test kits, it would be wise to purchase them as they are very valuable!! While you are waiting to get the new tank, increase the airation of that tank....it might be wise to move some fish into another tank with aristones.... BTW.....Are you using a water conditioner to remove clorine and chloramine? "NZed" wrote in message ... Hi I am new to the newsgroup and have recently purchased a tank. Jeez thats a huge tank are you sure thats right for each goldfish ? what about the size of goldfish...mine are only 2 inches long x 8 and 1 inch approx for the two blackmores. The fancies are smaller, but are more sensitive than the ordinary ones. You should either take some back and get a medium size tank (I've got three gf in a 46 gallon tank (that's 4ft by 15 by 16)); keep them and get a GIGANTIC tank; keep them and get a pond(!); keep them and get several smaller tanks; take them all back and get different fish... They like the company of other goldfish, so if there's any way you can get a 30 gallon tank and keep three I'd go for that. I started like you did, (pretty recently, too) knew nothing about keeping goldfish, believed the lady in the shop (who is actually very nice and knowledgeable about everything except goldfish, sigh) and had three of them, some minnows and an algae eater in a 13 gallon tank to start with. (aka Goldfish Hell.) The bigger tank is so much better all round; the fish like it and I love it. I felt awful when I first moved them, they would swim 18 inches then slow down, they were so used to the glass being there. Your fish _will_ die if you keep them all in that little tank. you could get away with a couple if you were absolutely scrupulous about water changes etc, but they wouldn't be happy and it wouldn't be good for them. Feedback
I am certainly going to get the 180 litre tank. Its the biggest I can get to fit in my room. Just hope its big enough for the 10 fish in the medium term. The good news the fish are a lot healthier ...vast improvement overnight. After adding the airstone they are a lot more perky....the red around the gills has gone and the dorsal fins are back to normal. Thanks for the feedback. NZed "NZed" wrote in message ... NZed 180litre would be ok for approximately 4-5 fancy goldfish. Your major problem is you have comets which ideally need 20 gallons per fish! I would definitely suggest giving all the comets back, they are typically fast swimming fish and need the space. |
