Fish feeding question ...

Whenever I feed my fish with food that basically floats or stays close
to the top, some of the food eventually gets sucked into my hang-on
filter intake before the fish have a chance to grab it.

I was thinking of putting a net or something around the intake, but then
the food would just get caught on that. Any other clever ideas?

You should shut off the filter during feeding which should only last about
5 minutes anyway.
