LR & Cycling

I'm going to go ahead and purchase 45 lbs of Fiji LR from liveaquaria. My
tank is a 46 gallon and it has been up for only 100 hours. I have heard
good things about this company and they are only a 4 hour drive (which I
drive on my route to my home town at least once a month).

I have the biowheel penguin 400 filter, seaclone 100 skimmer and as I was
told earlier; I'm going to take the Biowheels off of the filter and use it
for water circulation. I'm just wondering if I should leave the wheels on
for any period of time during cycling or if I should just take them off now?
The rock should be here by Thursday of next week. My plans are to let the
tank cycle until the LR arrives. I'll just put the LR in the tank after a
quick rinse in fresh sal****er. Is this the best method? I've read about
putting the fresh shrimp to rot in the tank. Is this good? I also have
some frozen brine shrimp. Could I dump some of this in there?

Also my lighting is RO. I know I should upgrade, but the cost of all the LR
will put it out of reach for a while. I just wish I could simply upgrade
bulbs and not have to get ballasts too. Is there high output bulbs I could
use in place of my regular fluorescents?

I think you could just throw the live rock in there and it would help the
cycliing
process. There will be some die off from the rock and that could be the kick
needed to get the tank cycled.

Mark would know for sure.

I agree with you. Since the tanks only been set up for 100 hours, I
wouldn't think they'd make much of an impact on the overall bacterial
presence. g

All this is assuming there are no ther organisms in the tank. The
ammonia and nitrite is going to get very high during the cycle.

Since the LR is only 4 hours away, are you going to get it
or have it delivered? If you are getting it, take a
container or two with sal****er so you can keep the rock
submerged.

If it arrives shipped, hopefully it has been wrapped in wet
newspaper and bagged. Assuming the weather in your area is
still slightly reasonable, the LR should be fine.

I would test the Ammonia Nitrite and Nitrate in your tank
before you add the rock. When the rock arrives (assuming it
is delivered), open it up and smell it. If it smells clean
and fresh / salty, it is not going to cycle much. Put it in
the tank as is. (Be sure to look for any sponges on the
rock. If it was out in the air, those will die and add
ammonia to your tank.)

If you've not already added dead shrimp to your tank, I
wouldn't worry about it. Once the rock is in the tank, be
sure to test your water daily, documenting the numbers so
you can chart the Ammonia spike, and subsequent Nitrite and
later Nitrate readings.

You can't change NO (Normal Output) lighting to any other
type of higher output lighting without changing the ballast.
