One of my amano shrimp is pregnant. I'd like to try to raise the fry and I
have heard that they need salt water in order to survive until they reach the post larval stage. Can I use regular aquarium salt (Doc Wellfish's) to make the salt water? I've done so before when I hatched brine shrimp, so I'm guessing that it would be ok to use it to rear the amano shrimp as well. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Does anyone have any suggestions? Google the aquaria groups for this subject. Somebody did a very good webpage on breeding amanos and posted the link here a while ago. -- Victor Martinez Owned and operated by the Fantastic Seven (TM) Send your spam he Email me he |

Here is a nice artle Wilma Duncun wrote on breeding these guys http://www.fish-forums.com/board/cms...cle.php?aid=77 Thanks for the link, it confirmed most of my research on this subject. However, there was no mention of anything relating to the question I really had: Is regular aquarium salt (meant for freshwater fish) adequate for creating salt water for raising these shrimp? The article you posted mentioned using aquarium salt to create a brackish environment for the adult shrimp, but did not say what he used for raising the fry. I'm afraid I don't know much about salt and there are so many varieties out there! |

I'm afraid I don't know much about salt and there are so many varieties out there! Although... I don't know what species of shrimp Wilma Duncan bred, but it wasn't Amano shrimp. I might guess cherry shrimp. Amano shrimp don't hatch as miniature shrimp (like e.g. cherrys do), and the larvae *require* salt water, significantly more salty than Duncans "one table spoon of salt per five gallons". I've written about my breeding of Amanos he http://mikes-machine.mine.nu/breeding_yamato.htm Regarding which salt to use, I would strongly recommend filtered natural seawater. If you can't get hold of that, I would recommend a high-quality salt mix intended for coral reef aquaria. If you can't get hold of that, it *might* be possible to use table salt and liberal amounts of bicarbonate (to maintain pH). |
