Happy Thanksgiving to you all. I'm thankful for all the information that
you guys have given me. It is officially Winter here in NW Indiana, at least in my book. We got two inches of snow today. Sure made the pond look pretty though, it was looking so dreary before everything turned white. The fish seem fine so far, I guess only time will tell if they will make it through a Winter here. The pond is only 165 gallons and 2' feet and I only have 13 2-3" feeder gf in it. Dan |

Now it's plunged into the 30s. No snow here yet but a lot of rain last night. My pond water was 64F today so I went ahead and fed them lightly. -- Carol.... the frugal ponder...(zone 6 TN) http://www.heartoftn.net/users/windsong/index.html Pricelesswa http://www.pricelessware.org http://www.pricelesswarehome.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Brghhhh. I live in Louisville, and was glad to see it didn't come this far south. But the air temperature was brisk, with that typical smell of winter in the air. The water temperature in the pond finally reach 55 F today. Even so, the koi, goldfish and shubukans were still active and hungry, while my albino channel cat wasn't interested. That is usually the sign for me to reduce feeding. When it gets a few degrees colder, I usually stop feeding them altogether unless they are really interested in eating. I have a question for you. Do you have any ice on the surface of your pond? If so, you may want to add a de-icer or an air stone to keep a hole open so that you can have gas exchange. Also, the last thing you want in northern Indiana in the winter is to find your pond is frozen solid with 13 fishcicles in the middle of it. |

I have my pump running about 9" below the surface on one of the preformed
plant ledges, that way the water on the bottom doesn't get circulated and the pond doesn't freeze over. I talked to the owner of a local petstore and he has a pond the same size as mine and he said that is what he does and he never has any problems with his fish and he has a couple koi. I don't want to lose my gf but if I do I'll only be out a couple bucks and I'll know better for next year. I'm not sure what the temperature in the water is but I don't have any ice yet, I took the thermometer out so it wouldn't break.
