Default Quarantine Tank - help?

(X-posted because the GF group is a little sparser than the FWF group.)

Well, pish! Thanks to a rather inhumane "Fish Pond" at the local school,
we're now the unexpected owners of another Goldfish.

Anyway, I have a spare 10 gallon and can get New Fish started in there. My
question is, do I need to do anything else to New Fish, except make sure he
doesn't die or get symptoms in the next month or so? Add Epsom salts,
medications, anything? anything?

I already know about cycling the tank and all, he should be ok there because
I can get some culture from my established system. Ideally, he would have
been going into a tank already established, but it is what it is.

Rest of this post is a rant:

I was amazed to see they actually still do that! I expect better from
schools. Last time we did one of those, we got a coupon from PetSmart. That
fish is still with us, living happily in a 29 gallon all by himself. (Well,
a snail too.) I saw one kid leaving with 8 fish. Like her parents are going
to go buy her an 80 gallon tank today.

I'm a bit of a purist, but I'd say no. I believe in holding off on
medications of any kind until symptoms present themselves. Just watch
NewFish's water parameters and change water as needed. Got a sponge
filter or something in there?

As for your rant, I couldn't agree more. I would urge you to write to
the school board and share your feelings. 95% of those fish will have
died horribily within a week. Do some research and bury them in facts
and statistics.
