Billy got up from the bar and shouted: : "Black Shuck" wrote in message ... | Some friends are moving away, and have offered me their tank, never done | an aquarium before, sounds like something I could handle (no pets at the | mo). Was looking for some sites that have real newbie info on there, | the real basics... Any good places to shop for stuff, in the UK?? | | Cheers. | I'm hoping to not turn into a fish serial killer :-) Congrats on looking for information. You're already on the right path to avoid becoming "fish slayer". g Subscribe to rec.aquaria.marine.reefs This group is pretty dead. Try the following sites: http://faq.thekrib.com/sbegin.html Great beginner site http://www.melevsreef.com/ Info on DIY stuff, a wide range of other info. A regular in the groups. www.reefcentral.com Excellent forum for marine aquarists. Just stay away from the advanced topics for now, you'll OD your brain. g Also, can I recommend a book, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...024686-0011919 The Conscientious Marine Aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Sal****er Hobbyists by Robert M. Fenner Welcome to the obsession......Tell us about the tank you'll be getting. Keep posting! billy Tank should be dropped round (hopefully not literally) tomorrows, seem to remember when I saw it last, it was a reasonable size, bit will post the CC when I get it.. Thanks for the links, and I'll have a scan on ebay/amazon for that book. Cheers. Well I got the tank, and loads of other stuff to sift through, the tank is 14.5 Gallon (or for those us that use a proper measurement system, 54Litres). I know it depends on the fish, but typically how many fish should I be looking at putting in there? |

Assuming it's freshwater, which I previously neglected to find out, there is a rule of thumb that states "one inch of tropical fish per gallon". (yes, I'm in the US, and we have a lousy measurement system, so roughly 6mm of fish per litre) Keep in mind the adult size of the fish before purchase. This rule has many exceptions. Some fish are too territorial to share their space with other fish, for example. billy |

Indeed it does, and a damn good one at that. "The Krib" http://faq.thekrib.com/ Don't let it keep you from asking questions, though. Also, this group is pretty slow, add rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc to your list. billy |

Throw in a betta, a Pomacea bridgesii, java fern and anubias and you should be good to go. -- "I have to decide between two equally frightening options. If I wanted to do that, I'd vote." --Duckman |
