Thanks all for the responses. I'm actually out of Northern California.
The fish is really going to be centered around planted tanks. As far as
the location, would it be better to be in a place with high foot
traffic or car traffic?. I'm sure parking would also be a plus right?
How far would you all be willing to travel to a good fish store?

yep parking is good!!
carrying fish tanks around is no fun!
the other thing that seems to work well
is offering to 2 types of things
a cheap one and a higher quality more expensive one
makes the choice easy for people

A few more

(1) try to get a good contact cheap imported foam from china. DIY people
love it and you can cut to size for any filter. Big chunks for sumps or
little ones for the rest.
(2) Ring around and find an aqua culture food supply place. DO your research
first as not all will send samples. At the very least read lots of your
favourite fish foods and figure out the basic protien levels etc that you
would like. Buy a huge load and divide it up. Yes usually expensive but done
right you can recoup the investment quickly.
(3) Employ hobbyists. If your fish staff aren't excited on new fish day get
new ones. heh heh
(4) It's all about the water. Nice warm clean water and good food. = brite
happy fish
(5) Use products you sell in your shop
(6) Walk around with a parrot
(7) actually put a 'Do not tap the glass' sign on every tank. Then ya can
say 'jeez' heh heh
