Hi,
I need some help with a problem I am having with my rose bushes. They are planted in a sunny area where they get enough light. But I get very few blooms and the leaves have black spots all over. Also, on another rose bush something seems to be eating the leaves. Are the black spots a disease? What is it and how can I prevent it? What is eating the rose leaves and how do I deter it? Thank you for your help. |

I don't know about the leaves that appear to be "eaten" but the black spots are
a fungal disease, aptly named Black Spot. You ought to be able to find info on the Internet about it as far as treatment, etc. Donna |

You ought to be able to find info onthe Internet about it as far as treatment, etc. It is caused by moisture on the leaves, and you can get a spray from Walmart or where ever specifically made for it....If you do not like using chemicals in the garden add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap to a quart of water and spray it on a couple of times a week Jerri http://www.fringeweb.com/Ponds/JerrisPond |

The best thing I have found to do for black spot is to be ruthless. You
have to strip the bushs of all the older leaves that have spots. Then you have to completely clean up and destroy the mulch around the base of the bushs. Burn or dispose of everything, do not compost it. New healthy leaves will grow back and you will get rid of the disease. The only problem with this is that whatever is eating your leaves could have some of the disease on it and spread it. If you suspect slugs or snails go out at about 10:00 pm with a flash light and ALWAYS (day or night) get rid of ANY slug or snail you find. Hope this helps, Teresa |
