I have a cleaner ship that molts once a month is that normal? The
thing is getting hugh. The antenna? (not sure what it is called)is almost 11"-12" across. Will this thing be like the fish out of water by Helen Palmer? If it gets any bigger I might eat it. LOL Rick |

I have several Lysmata species and they molt twice a month, regularly to one day of accuracy. They synchronize molting and do not molt together: one shrimp molts, than the second molts the next week. This way every week one of them molts... They exchange the function of male and female... Short after molting the shrimp takes the role of female and is fertilized by its partner: the shrimp which molted one week ago. What is quite funny, the partner acting as male is carrying eggs from the time it was playing role of female. Pretty interesting animals! p.s. I am not dosing iodine but I feed my hepatus tang with dried seaweed, so I believe I add iodine in an organic form with the food. |

Interesting Info - Thanks Pszemol!
The shrimp I have is a white banded cleaner shrimp-(Lysmata amboinesis) I do dose the tank with iodine, 5mm twice a week for a 120 gal. I also add Reef Pure 5mm Strontium twice a week 5mm Calcium twice a week The shrimp are very interesting creatures- Any links on additional info on them? Just change my lighting today as a LFS had 25% off so I added 1 more 250watt 20,000 MH light to the tank. I have already seen a difference in some of my corals. I was using a JBL. Pathological ? ;-)[/b] No Psz , I'm just checking. Molting in this shrimp can be much shorter than that :-) Rick You need to read this :-) http://www.marineland.com/seascope/ss2002_issue3.pdf http://www.biolbull.org/cgi/content/full/203/3/347 Boomer Want to talk chemistry ?
