Default lighting for 180

suggestions please.

I have a new addition to the family its a180 gallon all-glass and I want to
install MH lighting over it. question is on all my tanks so far I use 400w
bulbs but want to try the 250's over this tank, but just cant bring myself
to do it.

I plan to use 4 bulbs @ 20KK without supplemental lighting. its what I use
on my 75 reef and I like it.

would the 250w's be enough light or should I go with the 400's.

thanks in advance

24.5 x 24.5 x 72.5 and the clams will be on the bottom sitting on the DSB.
I have read and read and all points to 250w MH being well suited for up to
36" deep, but like I said I am a little skeptical to say the least.

the 250 would be nice as far as heat and cost.

thanks

250's will do you good, everything will grow, if you want to propigate you can toss 1000W
on, or raise things up some stony corals will be a different color, but still good
looking, asuming you would put them 20" down which I wouldnt do

what it comes down to is neither is too much, but your 75 didnt require 400's not that it
doesnt look real good , for a while I ran my 2 250's on my 37 lotsa light is coooool
but now I am back down to 1 175 and nothing is growing slower than before

I slightly disagree with 36" for a 250, but only slightly and your at 24 - DSB or even
just a thin sb so you will do fine.you will need minimum 3 bulbs, and your 4 covers that

over on RC I posted this question and got a recommendation that HQI (double
ended bulb)250's give the equivalent light of 400 mogul based
bulbs..........any truth to it?

and what/who makes the best reflector for the HQI's.

I have no experience with them, but it close to what ive heard before, ive never seen
anyone saying what watage lines up with what but ive heard ppl say its noticeably brighter
than there mongul based bulbs.

I just bought one from a light place and diy'd my hood to match what I bought. I like i
think its called a spider reflector but ive only owned 3 different ones.

none. The common HQI bulbs tend to produce a different spectrum, but
produce the same ammount of light watt for watt as a mogul based
bulb.

http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/a.../2/default.asp

The HQI are nice lights if you can find them. Locally HQI are 3x the
cost of mogule bulbs.
