Hi, new to group, would like advice...`

Hi,

I am new to the group. I have been keeping fish for years, but just now
thought it would be nice to chat with others who do as well.

My main tank right now is a 29g, Penguin 330 and Aquaclear 300 filtration,
Ebo-Jager heater, natural gravel, big piece of driftwood, few plastic
plants.

Inhabitants: 1 Red Tiger Oscar, 1 Firemouth cichlid, 1 4-lined pictus cat 1
Pl*co, and 1 Channel cat.

My questions are many.

I always strive for great filtration. What do you think of my setup as
well as filtration. I have never used a canister filter. I like the setup
I have with the aquaclear and the penguin with the bio wheels. I use ammo
carb in a bag in the aqua clear and ammo carb and replaceable filter pieces
for the Penguin. The water is very clear, but I always feel it can be
clearer. I am I guess somewhat obsessed like that.

I also have a 10g in the bedroom that is overstocked but doing fine. It
contains common variety tropicals like tetras, barbs, cats, etc. It is
doing fine for over a year now with little maintenance. I couldn't imagine
not having a tank in the bedroom.

Well, just wanted to share. I also would like criticism and advice on my
setup and how I could improve it with the least cost (obviously). I was
thinking of adding a cannister filter to the 29g as additional filtration,
but let me know what you think.

*gulp* an Oscar, a Firemouth, a Pictus, a Pleco and a Channel cat in a
29g. I hope these are all babies which are going into a *much* larger
tank very soon.

Generally speaking, filter the tank according to the size it should be
(to fish load), and not necessarily what size it actually is. The waste
generated will not change if it's in 100g or 30g.

The filtration is fine but your tank is over stocked even if they are
babies.I would seriously consider trading in everthing but the firemouth and
getting some more firemouths.

I can only offer criticism. Get rid of all of those fish and get some that
are more suitable for such a tiny tank. Your channel cat and pleco will get
bigger than the tank is. The others will get so big that they will have a
hard time even turning around in the tank, except for the firemouth. But
even he gets too big for such a small tank, especially considering how
aggressive they become.

hey viper, i agree with everyone else on this one about the tank size
and stuff. one problem though.

Your channel cat will kill and eat every fish yopu put in with him,
regardless of size, their real stone cold mothers. (ah pulp fiction) id
upgrade the tank to around 50 gals and keep the oscar and the pleco,
easily the collest fish ive ever kept.

:your current tank situation. The types of fish you have now will out
:grow the tank. This advice comes from either our own personal
:experence, (all bad) or from others who tried before us.
Keeping those fish like you are now is equivalent to getting a German
Shepard, a Rottiwiller, and a couple of black Labs, and putting them all
in a 5x6 dog pen!! Most ppl are familar with dogs, and know they don't
grow to the size of the enviroment they live in. The same is true for
fish. I am not meaning to "flame" you . Just to point out how your
aquarium stocking exists in terms most ppl understand.

I appreciate everyones advice. I am not thinking of upgrading to a 55g.
Would my current filtration setup and other equipment be sufficient? I
know I will need to get more gravel, but I would like to keep everything
else the same, if possible.

Thanks for all of the advice. I understand the analogy. I wasn't able,
for some reason, to read all of the replies, but I got the one about the
dogs.

a 55 is a decent tank. But it is still far too small to keep the fish you
have. And the filtration will need to be upgraded and probably the heater
for that size tank.

the thing is, once you start down this road you will want multiple tanks
anyway. Just keep the 29 for some small fish. If you want to keep your
current fish then start thinking about a minimum size of 150 gallons or
larger.

Your fish will die within a few weeks, the catty will devour them all.

closing your eyes and saying it isnt going to happen is moronic at best,
solve the problem now before you lsoe a good few dollars worth of fish.

Your current filter and equipment is going to be no where near
exceptable, neither is your tank size. your fish will create such a huge
bio load theyll be dead in a few months if they dont kill each other in
the process.

God people like this make me so mad, why wont they listen to the voice
of reason and experteise.
