I noticed my goldfish's tail fin had a few "frayed" like pieces and a scale or two missing on one of his sides. I checked my tank, PH level around 7.5, ammonia was high- so I did a partial water change, took dying plant out, let the water it sit a couple of hours, and put then ammonia block in. About 1 day later I again checked the water, PH normal, high ammonia levels, so I added more ammoina block. 3rd day- noticed water temp had risen- ammonia levels dropped some, & PH has drastically dropped also. 6.0 or lower...not sure what to do. What should I do to bring it back up? Why did it drop in the first place? Also, how much should I feed one goldfish and two algea eaters? -- UFOsasha Not sure why it dropped, get a KH tester to ensure your water is buffered enough. Maybe the ammonia blocker is altering your PH. I'd do an immediate 50% water change though. Increasing PH is not as hard on fish as lowering it. |

The best way to lower ammonia levels is to perform large water changes
(50%-75%) in a ten gallon tank that should not be too hard. Your ph may have dropped because your water quality is degrading. How long has it been since your last water change? How much water do you normally change? I do 50% weekly water changes on my tanks and I am not having water quality issues. Goldfish are quite messy fish and need extra filtration and larger water changes than tropical fish. On another note, you may find that as your fish grow your tank will become overstocked. Not sure what type of algea eaters you have but they dont normally mix well with goldies. Hope this helps, Maria What type of food are you feeding now? Both types of fish you have will really enjoy some fresh succhinni (sp?), oranges or green leaf lettuce. Rinse, slice and stick to the side of the tank with a veggie clip (can be purchased at your local fish store) |

Certain brands of ammonia locking products will cause pH to plummet.
Which one are you using? Lilly UFOsasha wrote: About 1 day later I again checked the water, PH normal, high ammonia levels, so I added more ammoina block. |
