Default hair algae

I am having a issue with hair algae, so I went to LFS to have my water
tested and to ask for some advice. He said that my water looked good
except nitrate (not to bad, he suggested raising my alk to above normal.
I am afraid that it could hurt my red craps I have in the tank. Is
raising the Alk a common way to fight hair algae? Note: I have a 44 gal
tall tank, 52 lbs of live rock and a prizm skimmer.

I do have a RO unit, the corallife 24GPD unit.

No, PO, not RO. what is your Phosphate measure - and what did your nitrates
actually measure?

MY PO is below .25 (according to my Hagen test kit) My nitrates are
between 20 and 40. My skimmer hardly collects any foam now.

Yeah, 20-40 nitrates is not good. They should ideally be zero.
