Miniature Cattails dilema

I don't know what it is but I have never been able to get them to grow
or last.

I have experimented with them planted at various depths from 0" to 2"
or more, in a half barrel and also in a large pot in a natural pond
where everything else flourishes. I have planted them in the pond
without a pot as well, yet they all seem to turn yellow and die or rot
off at the waterline...I have fertilized and not fertilized. What
gives with these miniatures? I also have the same problems with
horsetails......everything else does great.

All my lillys have put up numerous new growth since being shredded by
hail, and my Iris just about grew overnight after being torn up with
hail as well and most all of them (yellow, Louisiana, and Gamecocks)
are all in bloom.......and spreading fast.much to my delight. I have a
row of Canna's which are now about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall doing fine as
well........

The only two plants that have failed to thrive and spread
in the Frog Bog have been miniature cattails and miniature
horsetails. Everything else in there has gone gonzo.

Don't know anything about plant genetics but you wonder
if the process of miniaturizing these plants turned off
some kind of 'spread and take over the world' gene.

I must have something in between the miniatures and the common cattails. Mine
get about four feet tall, and have grown the fruit (seed pod) every year since I
got them nearly three years ago. The leaves are narrow and have a bright,
delicate green color. My cattails are behind my waterfall, which is built into
one end of the pond. The pots are sitting on a ledge about 15"-18" below water
level. I've never had to fertilize them. You might go to a pond store and see
if they have any of these, if you are interest, and if they aren't too tall.
They are very attractive, and seem to be hearty. They also attract beautiful
dragonflies (which are mosquito eaters).
