I just purchased a flame scallop for my 7gal nano reef. A total impulse
purchase. I havent added livestock in quite awhile, so I figured why not. They look so peaceful and pretty there in the tank at the fish store. I get him home, and geez-us! This thing hops around! Who knew? It looks like tantric flying. When he snaps shut to hop around, he kicks up all this sand which is no good, eventually collected in his filter feeding mouth and expelled it. But this guys a live wire. And then that surreal tongue/foot he's got, he'll extend it out like a frog searching for flies, and use it to pull himself up on rocks. Very cool animal, but I was expecting something to sit there and look pretty, this is a tazmanian devil. Well, actually, once he finds a comfy spot, he does relax and hang out for a long time. But I didnt know they moved at all, so imagine my shock when the thing actually ran from me. Right now, hes' perched at the top of the liverock near the water line. Now I'm worried about the water change I have to do tonight, it will expose him for a few minutes. That cant be good, I just hope its not too traumatic. Oh well, just had to share. |

sounds like you got a real character there Phil. IME scallops will move but
not as dramatically as you describe. also they aren't photostetic so they tend to find a place out of the light (usually out of good viewing as well) in the back of the tank or behind rockwork, then they will remain without moving again as long as conditions are suitable. kc |

I think he's a bit big for my nano, and causing the sandstorms and all, plus
the reef lighting isnt to his liking. I do also have 46 gal FOWLR with normal lighting, and I'm tempted to try him there, but I'm guessing my humu trigger would find him to be a tasty morsel. Is that correct? Dragon Slayer wrote: sounds like you got a real character there Phil.
