Default tank killing fish

Hi All,

Please help! I have a 3ft tank that I decided I was just going to keep
Rainbow fish in. Bought the tank In February. I wash it and then set up the
tank and left for 2 weeks. I did notice that loads of browny fur started
growing on almost everything, but once I turned filter up it seemed to clear
but has stuck slightly to an artificial plant and develops on glass every
couple of days.

Anyway First bought 2 I think Barred Rainbows then 2 Boesecanman Rainbows
and a plec. The plec died I checked water everything okay did water changes
and all other fish seemed okay then got an Pakistani Loach and a sucking
loach still everything fine. they were there a couple of weeks. Then got 4
baby clown loach their okay.

Then last weekend I got 2 Australian Rainbows and 2 Madagascan Rainbows and
an albino plec. I also put in a cave that I got from pet shop that is
usually for reptiles but asked if it was safe to go in fish tank and was
assured yes it was fine.

Tuesday lunch time came home and both Australian rainbow are dead with my
plec trying to make his way through them.
Came home Tuesday evening and on of the Madagascan Rainbows is dead.
Checked water still all okay but did water change just incase about 25%.

Come back lunch Wednesday the Madagascan Rainbow is dead. Checked water
again and still seems okay. did another water change.

Thursday lunch time come home and one of the Boeseman Rainbows is dead then
thought maybe cave releasing some kind of poison in water. Contacted
manufacturer and they said they are safe for tanks. In the evening the
albino plec dies. I did notice though when I took it out it's belly has gone
green and white fu like mould on it but it hadn't been dead that long as It
was swimming around fine at lunch.

So another water change still checking water still every thing seems okay
and I get up this morning and one of the Barred Rainbows is dead.

I know I have gone on a bit but without all details you might not be able to
help. I only have 2 rainbows left and the loaches I don't want anymore fish
till I have managed to sort this out.

Please Help!

Keep some hardy fish until your tank stablizes and you learn a little
more about this hobby. Don't get Plecos they are hard to keep. Get
some platties Danios, or one Blue Gourami. Wait 4 months, if anything
is still alive and you are still interested in this hobby, then add to
your collection.

How are you checking the water? What tests are you using and what are
the results? Did the fish look or act unusual before they died? What
water conditioner are you using - does it handle chloramines as well as
chlorine? I asked that one because you seem to be losing fish about a
day after water changes which is about the right timing for chloramine
poisoning.

Leave your water 48 hours then do a full test (PH, Ammonia, Nitrite,
nitrate, GH, KH and chlorine) and post your results. Check tap water in same
way (leave to stand 24 hours).
