Feeding oscar bugs

Hi,

I like to leave a bit of the lid on my oscars tank open so some bugs
can fall in during the night when the light is on. I also feed him any
bugs that I find around the house.

Are there any particular bugs that might be poisonous to an oscar?

Anything which carries toxins or poisons. Bees, wasps, some spiders etc.

Mine weren't keen on moths, maybe too fuzzy? ;~)

Personally I would not feed anything other than properly prepared foods, you
never know what household bugs contain. If you think of the disgusting
habits prevalent in most of these things, you would not want them added to
your tank let alone actually fed to your fish!

And what do you think Oscars eat in the wild? Sterilized bugs?

I also have to say that, given what they put in dog and cat food, do
you honestly think that pet food makers care what's in fish food?

Well, I'm sure they halt production and trash the entire lot if a "bug"
happens to fly into the mix..........................

Seriously, I've fed Oscars anything from June bugs to 2 inch grasshoppers
with nothing more serious than a few LARGE Oscar turds.........

You have a very good point!

However, horrible crud filled things in twenty-eleven thousand gallons of
lake are less of a problem than a similarly odeous thing in a 50 gall tank!
If it's eaten and converted to fish-poo it may not be a problem but if Mr
Ocsar misses a few, what then!

Boy, you don't like bugs do you? *grin* You're right that uneaten food
in a 50 gal tank is a problem. Seems like it would take a pretty
seriously infested house for that to happen, though. After all, when
does a cichlid EVER miss a piece of live food that lands in its tank? :-)

My oscars were pretty fond of grasshoppers-since they are nearly back
in season I'm guessing they'll enjoy them again. They sometimes eject
the kicker legs tho.

actually fish food is almost 50% ash... go figure.

oscars will eat anything.

avoid bees and wasps just because of the string.

but yeah, anything small and harmless is fair game.

mine would never eat spiders, the first night i had him he was sulking
in the corner, i caught this huge spiders and threw it in (im in the uk,
a huge spier is about an inche long lol)

it splashed around for a while then sank... and began to walk towards
the oscar, i laughed as the fish belted away from it and gave the rather
soggy arachnid its freedom.

from that day on the fish wouldnt touch spiders. go figure
