Default Removing the Filter Sock

Before leaving for a 4 day trip last summer,

I replaced my filter sock to ensure that it would not get cloged and
start to over flow in the sump.

Much to my suprise after returning it did what I thought it wouldnt- It
Over flowed causing the water level in the tank to drop-then burning up
my return pump.

My question is, would it really be ok to run a tank for a week with
out the use of a filter sock and have the water just run stright thru
the sump. On a normal week I have to clean and rinse the filter sock
twice a week so the over flow does not happen. Is that normal?

Any suggestions?

Rick

I sure hope your tank would survive a few days without a sock since my
tanks have been running for a few years with no mechanical filtration
what so ever on them. I would suggest you remove it just because it is
capturing a lot of the food for your corals rather than allowing it to
be pumped back up into the tank for the corals to try and capture it again.

Thanks for the info, I'm taking the advice SKIM SKIM SKIM.

I just added another skimmer a backback II I had out in the garage and
hung it on my sump. It will be interesting to see how well the back
bac works and see how/if it will collect any DOC as I also have a Euro
reef skimmer that has been on the tank from day 1.

I think that the backbac is ok for a stand alone small tank, but we
will see if it gets any DOC at all. I dont think it will as the
euroreef works XLNT anyway. Just thought I give it a try as it was just
collecting dust in garage anyway.

It will be nice not having to keep checking/cleaning the filter sock
anymore. Nice to see others in the same hobbie so helpful.

THANKS/Rick
