Hi all,
I'm setting up a new tank after a wipe out last year. I never had yellow Algae before and wondered if this is a good or bad sign? My set up is 70g with 60lbs of Crushed Coral, 20lbs of arragonite sand, 12kg LR (more to be added) 4 x 55W T5 lights (7K) and 40W Actinic tube salinity 0.022 at the moment, temp 25.5 - 26C Put the water and salt in two weeks ago, put the LR in 1 week ago. Today i suddenly have yellow algae on the LR and not so much purple algae. Got the LR (cured) from LFS. The algae seems to be mostly were the powehead pumps the water onto the LR and some on the bottom? I've also got a seaclone 100 and a vectrom 15W UV neith switched on yet. Is thi yellow algae a good sign? Les |

I wouldn't think so. Since the tank is very new, only run
your lights a few hours a day for now. Adding some snails and hermits will help control any algae growth. Turn on the skimmer immediately. That isn't a really good one, to be honest. It would be better for you to shop around for a good skimmer that will care for your future bioload. What is your water source? Tap water, or filtered? Hi Marc,
Many thanks. I'll take your advice on those points. I'm keen to do this tank right and get it established. I'm using tap water - here in the UK the RO are too expensive for now, but i do have Phosphate and Nitrate removers in the external filter. The Yellow algae is now brown, but it seems to have settled and not got worse. I got 10 hermits from the LFS, I'll get more next week when they get stock. If I could ever figure out a way to ship you guys RO units for a fair
price, I'd be rich. I can't believe it is so hard to get RO units out there. Can you buy distilled water at your supermarket? Here it is about $0.40 /gallon. That might be your best bet vs. tap water. Marc Les Johnstone wrote: Hi Marc, Many thanks. I'll take your advice on those points. I'm keen to do this tank right and get it established. Reasonably priced RO units in the UK...
http://www.ro-man.com/shop/index.php Example... 4 stage 50 Gallons/Day with DI = 70 UK Pounds (120 USD) or 6 Stage 100 Gallons/Day with DI, Pressure Gauge and Digital Inline TDS Meter = £145 UK Pounds. (250 USD) This is what I have... works great. Input TDS = 260, Output TDS = zero! They also do a pressure storage tank, drinking faucet, filters, membranes, etc. No affiliation, I'm just a very satisfied customer ! Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info. The certainly is a good price for the RO units. I'll check that out. Les "Steve" wrote in message ... Marc marc, what kind of skimmer would you recommend? i have a coralife superskimmer, rated for a 125gallon tank on my 55 gallon. i have a 65 gallon version on my 20 gallon quarantine tank. i WAS gonna go with the CPR backpack, but they wanted 130$ for it, and it would only handle up to 55 gallons. since i already have an emp 400 on my 55, the 125g skimmer was the ch oice i made. what are your thoughts? -- The woo still lives! The new beast: 94 Acura Integra GSR w/ cold air intake, back seats removed, full exhaust w/ silencer, race cat, magnacore wires, bosch +4 plat sparkplugs, alloy wheels. more to come, check out www.team-integra.net !!! |

I would get a Remora before I got a CPR Bakpak again. There is a Remora
Pro rated for 125g, but the pump (Mag 3) is pretty large to look at in a 55g. I actually ran one in my son's 29g for almost a year. ![]() If you have a skimmer that is rated for 125g now, and you are pleased with the results, there is no reason to change.
