50-55F you should be feeding wheat germ or low protein foods. Watch the
weather, if there is going to be a down turn in temps, do not feed, even if
pond is 55F. ~ jan

=====================
I stop feeding mine when the water hits about 50F or when they start showing
lack of enthusiasm at feeding time. Where I live in the USA that usually
happens in early Nov.

Last Fall, my first as a ponder, the fish just started eating less and less.
They knew when to stop. I was advised to feed them wheatgerm food just
before they stopped eating as it is (so I was told) very bad for them to lie
around all Winter with protein in their GI tracts. The protein can degrade
to ammonia which will kill the fish. But..... the person who told this sold
me the wheatgerm.

I learned quickly to be suspect of any advice given to me by someone selling
the products they're recommending. I never fed my fish wheatgerm and
they're thriving and breeding like nobody's business. :-) In fact once
past the fry stage they get the more economically priced catfish and trout
chow at $10.00 to $12.00 per 50 lb bag - spring through fall.

When waters drop below 60=B0f fish are quite prone to infections,
feeding them is likely to add a source of pollution to the pond with
spoiled and dissolved organic stuff going spare.

I'm puzzled at the 'advice' of folk who push wheat germ diets going
into Winter, as an old time ponder I always saw better results going
into and out of Winter boosting fish diets with dog biccies, worms,
protein munchies such as cooked chicken, liver, beef, enough for them
to enthusiastically consume.

I sure saw better fish start Spring on that diet, with absolutely zilch
in the way of problems that many other folk who feed pricey 'fish
food'...

yeah, well the "wheat" and "oat" diets are undigestible anyway. in the fish, out the
fish pretty well unchanged. feed em chopped up shrimp and that sparingly. I feed my
fish lightly with regular food (mostly protein) until they arent interested anymore.
but then I do heat my pond so it is 50+ for all but one month a year.

I don't know what is puzzling about information that comes straight out of
pond books, magazines and the AKCA website.

That is not to say your experience isn't worthy and worth mentioning, but
the rest of us have our experiences that have also been positive, by
following those recommendations. ~ jan

but Jan, the AKCA website does stuff like post information provided by a guy makes
fish food. I know it is open war fare to suggest this but fish dont digest
carbohydrates (even the fish food producer admits this). I just dont see the point
in feeding wheat or oats. remember I too used to spout this idea until I started
looking into what the natural diet of fish was. Fish need two things, proteins and
fats. and they need it in a form that is digestible, so it should come from water
based animals and/or plants. Those pond books and magazines are for the most part
repeating the same thing was written way back when. What is really new is what
little information we can get from the breeder/growers of koi and GF, like those in
China, Japan, and sometimes from Brett in the US. They dont let out much in the way
of info. Ingrid
