No, I'm not planning to use table salt in my tank.
As some of you may recall, I acquired my entire marine set-up from a friend of a friend. Last night, the person in the middle and I were at a party together, and he mentioned that he had been unable to accept the set-up because he's sensitive to iodine and, in his words, salt-water tanks use iodized salt. Well, as soon as I got home I grabbed my big bag-o-salt and while is promenently mentions calsium and magnesium, I don't see iodine mentioned anywhere. OTOH, there's also no mention of anything else in salt. So, how much iodine is there is marine salt and how does it compare to table salt? (BTW, this particular person is generally regarded in our circle of friends as most the likely to make dubious statements.) |

Iodine is a very small minute trace in natural seawater and is
essential for corals and some inverts......I do not think it contains anywhere ear as much iodine in synthetic salt mixes as a container of Iodized salt would, but that statement is just a guess.....From what I have read, iodine is used up rather quickly for the most part ina typical marine tank. I really would find it strange if a synthetic salt manuf listed each and every ingredient in their mixes on the label.....probably just the major at most, and even that would be questionable. Looking at a 5 gal pail of IO and a smaller ocntainer of it and some Oceanic salt does not list the first ingredieint or percentages of contents anywhere On Sat, 28 Jan 2006 12:33:59 GMT, Samwyse wrote: No, I'm not planning to use table salt in my tank. The sea salt bag will have around .05 ppm of iodine, not
anywhere near what's in table salt, but I don't know what percentage is in table salt. Is he able to swim in the ocean?
