Cleaning the Aqua-C EV Series Skimmers...

Hi All,

Just a quick question on cleaning procedures for my EV-120.
It is easy enough to clean the collection cup every few days but the manual
also says to clean the Foam Tower. What exactly is the foam tower? Is it
the "Neck" part that comes up to the collection cup? Is wiping it with a
paper towel sufficient or do you guys pull it out of the sump and really
give it a good wash?

Mort,

The foam tower would be the "neck" as you say. Remove the collection cup
and the non-removable tube rising from the box is the part to clean. I
usually wipe mine with a paper towel (Viva- Has minimal fuzzies) making sure
to get under the lip of the rim. I also give it a remove and deep clean
once every 3-6 months. Some say to do it more often, but this has seemed to
work well for me. If your getting all kinds of gunk in there on a regular
basis you should make sure your air and water injectors are clear of any
blockage... Or your pump may need cleaned. Mine also acts funny for awhile
after cleaning, seems to be normal.

I clean the collection cup and tower on my EV120 once a week, using
paper towel on the tower. I also pull the entire unit out and give it
a good cleaning once a month.

I clean the foam tower every time I clean the cup. I was doing it every three
days like clockwork, which was perfect when I was dealing with micro algae in my
tank. Now that all of that is gone, I clean the skimmer and cup about once a
week. I'd prefer to do it more often though.

I pull out the EV-200 once every 6 months to really clean it super clean, using
hot water and white vinegar. I clean the pump at the same time.

i plumbed the elbow drain on the side of the collection cup to the
sewer line in my house. then drilled a hole in the lid of the cup. i
ran some 1/4 tube in the hole. it goes through the lid & into a 90
degree elbow (john guest fitting) & then in to a T fitting. i created
a closed loop with the remaining 2 connections in the T fitting & in
the tubing of that loop & punched holes with a thumb tack. then
attached a 120v solenoid to a timer. now once a day for 1 minute it
sprays the cup clean & all the crud washes down the sewer line. i
still clean in throat about every 3 weeks.

i read somewhere else of a guy who ran the waste output of his RO
filter in to his collection cup to wash it out.

FWIW- I learned from someone on here a few years ago that paper towels can scratch and dull acrylic over time
I use a brush and cotton towel on my CS8-3 now
