Default Anything wrong with a 24" high tank stand?

I'm starting to check out some of the stands available for aquariums and I
came across one that my wife and I both like, however, it's a little shorter
than what I'm used to seeing. Normally most tank stands seem to be around
28-30" tall, however, this one here is only 24". The tank that's gonna go
on it is a 55G (48*12*21 tall). I know this is sort of a weird question,
but I'm wondering if anyone has every kept an aquarium at that height and if
they have any comments.

Thanks,
Harry

P.S. The stand is made by Ameriwood, anyone heard of them? Good, bad
quality?

I think it may also will affect your options for filteration ... although, I
can't see why this would be a showstopper.

How would it affect my options for filtration?

what can fit under it? you haven't said what it's to be used for, but marine
tanks commonly have filtration and all other hardware in sumps under the
main tank.

Hmmm. Well, it puts the tank at a nice height for viewing from a sitting
position, but it puts the tank at a lot more risk of a knee or hip bump. If
the tank was set well back from the edge of the stand, I could see uses for
it..

Well i built a 24" high stand for the "sitting" view the problem my sump is
14"'s high and pumps are in the back of the sump bad idea g doesn't leave
alot of space to work, but i'm going to take out the sump and plumb the tank
to a crawl space, other than that it's sortof cool.....

I have one 24 inch stand and one 18inch stand... I like the 18inch the
best... it puts the fish right at eye level when sitting on the
sofa...

I have noticed though, that I had to provide plenty of extra hidding
places for the fish, since most fish do not seem to like having a
shadow "above" them... IE: when you walk up to a normal tank set at 30
inches or so, what with substrate and clearance, the fish are at or
about chest level... most of your shadow when you walk by is at or
below the eye of the fish... if, however, your shadow completely
covers the tank then the fish seem to get a little more intimidated.

No matter what though, I still really REALLY love that low stand in
the living room... I just moved the tank to a wall where you do not
quite stand in front of it to get to the sofa... looks really
wonderful!

Default Anything wrong with a 24" high tank stand?

My first aquarium was 4ft*2ft*x2ft.

My 10 year old son had asked for some goldfish and I said no!

He secretly dag a monsterous holein the back yard and lined it with plastic.
He then begged, borrowed and bought all kinds of goldfish from everywhere
and filled it up with them.

The first thing I knew about it was when I came home from work and found 50
goldfish of all varieties in my bath tub because his pond had sprung a leak.

That prompted an emergency trip to the LFS where I bought the only large
aquarium they had available, along with a cannister filter.

When the aquarium arrived, the delivery guys asked me where they should put
it.. They only place I could think of was to temporarily put it on the new
24" high coffee table I had bought for the wife.

A decade later, it is still on the same coffee table.

The cannister filter won't fit under the table, so it is squashed into a
corner next to it and I break my back every time I clean it. It is too low
to store much junk under it and much too dificult to clean under.

However, my four year old son loves it. It is just the right height for
him. It is just high enough so he can't lift off the canopy without help -
otherwise they would be fed every five minutes.

It is now a tropical aquarium and he can name every species in it.

I also like to sit on the floor and watch the fishy antics.

In spite of that, I have always made certain that my tank stands for my
other aquariums are of sufficient height.

Jim

Heh, that's a cute story!

I've put a 2ft tank on ordinary household furniture (with a piece
of board under it) and that's been fine. As long as whatever the
furniture is can hold my weight I think it's ok within reason.
I built a cab for my 4ft though. As long as it's higher than the
cat and sufficiently lidded that he can jump on and off without
catching any fish, it's ok for my household
