Default Reef Additives - Best Combination

Hi:

When it comes to adding to reef tanks does anyone have an opinion on the
best chemical's for calcium, iodine, and simply the total treatment. I have
consider Seachem, Kent, Tropic Marin, and Siefert. I currently use
Kalkwasser and Lugols solution, but the expansion on my corals could be
better. I have used biocalcium in the past. Kent seems very expensive by
the time you buy all that is recommended. Has anyone tried Siefert?

Thanks in advance.

Wayne,

The only stuff I dose is ESV's B-Ionic. It maintains alkalinity, pH and
Calcium. I dose it daily.

Where do you get the ESV? How costly is it? How simple is it to use?

Default Reef Additives - Best Combination

Marc,

I have been told I have to worry about calcium, iodide, kH, pH, magnesium
and trace elements.

I am currently adding Seachem Reef Calcium and Seachem Reef Plus for kH, as
well as magnesium. I recently started using Trace Marin, a suite of 3
different additives http://www.jbl.de/index_uk.html

I am feeding my corals a small amount of an Australian product called
Aquasonic Reef Nature every 2 -3 days (contains pulverised shrimp, fish, egg
albumen, sodium alginate, agar, calcium gluconate, yeast).

While the chemical suite, is quite costly, I am very happy with the way my
tank is starting to look. How can I tell if I can back off on some of the
trace elements?

Thanks

Phil

I ordered my last batch online, and it took forever to get it. Many LFS
sell it right off the shelf. Buying it by the gallon is truly the best
price-saving method, although quart bottles are important for easy daily
dosing. I've been reusing the original quart bottles for over 2 years
now.

My last order was for 8 gallons; 4g of each part. Cost including
shipping was $108.

Well, you can't really take care of all of those items, imho. Magnesium
needs to be four times the value of your Calcium, approximately. People
aim for 1400ppm, but I've never tried to pursue that myself. Heck, I
rarely even test Mg.

Iodine/Iodide is another elusive one to maintain, because it doesn't
last long in your tank. However, many frozen fish foods contain
micro-traces of iodine in the food, so each day when you feed you dose
your tank.

You need to worry about pH, dKH (alkalinity), Ca, and PO4 (phosphates),
plus salinity and temperature.

Since we can't test for trace elements, it is anyone's guess how much
you need or even should dose. So I almost never add any. I have two
bottles of Julian Sprungs Elements that I've yet to use up and it has
been a year since I got them. Water changes add the trace elements to
your tank each time you do them.
