A few months ago, you (and plenty others) gave me about a zillion
awesome ideas for my "stairs/plateau" project thingie in my aquarium.
I finally got the tiles... but the back of em look like unsealed
grainy gritty stuff. I'm thinking that might eventually leech into the
water, do you think I should seal them with something? A quick clear
coat (that spray stuff)? Paint on a layer of that silicone aquarium
glue? Whatchewdink?
Thanks!

Without knowing the composition of the tiles, we can only guess what they
will do, or you can measure. Drop a piece into a container of water and
measure the effect after a few days. A single piece in a small container
would correspond to an awful lot in an aquarium, so it should not take
too long to have some effect. The usual parameters are gH, kH and pH,
though I usually hear that clay is inert (though your tiles might not be
pure clay).

I don't think you want to be spraying a clear coat (polyurethane?) as the
tiles might soak the water in behind the clear coat and push it off
(besides whatever toxicity the clear coat brings to the water).
Fibreglass, 2 part epoxy and silicone are commonly used as sealers, if a
sealer is needed. hth
