More Goldfish Questions (sorry)

Hello. I always seem to be posting on here for one problem or
another. This is really about an ongoing problem that I've had.

I have my 4 fancy goldfish. I suspect most of you feel like you know
them personally. Anyway, I had a problem with my Ryukin who was just
floating away in the middle of the tank. She was having a split tail
and very long thin white stools. Well the good news is that she is
sooo much better. She still has a couple of 'misty looking' scales but
is like her former self again. I haven't seen any more thin white
stools from my fantail either. The problem is with my black moor and
pearlscale. My black moor looked like he had fungus. He had had tail
and fin rot not long after i got him from the pet store. Its very easy
to identify on a black moor :-) My pearlscale has red streaks at the
end of his tail.

So I used Furanase for 4 days, 50% daily water changes and 1 table
spoon of salt per 5 gallons. After the 4 days the fantail and ryukin
seemed to be much better. The red streaks are still on the pearlscale
and the misty scales are on the blackmoor. Both are slightly lethargic
and often rest on the bottom of the tank. Yesterday I purchased some
quick cure to see if that helps. They are also eating antibiotic food.
The don't seem keen on this. I have also changed the water changes to
every other day. I think it was stressing them too much.

Is there anything else i can do for them? I am goign to start feeding
them normally tonight. I think a week on that awful food is enough.

Sorry to keep burdening you all with all of this. Will be so happy
when I can change the water once a week and just sit and enjoy.

When I did a scrape on a GF with this symptom I found very tiny parasites so
used Quick-Cure. I don't know what the parasites were because they didn't
match the pics in my Johnson book 100%. This is a common problem. When
looking at a pic in a book and trying to compare it to what you see under a
'scope, an inexpensive 'scope no less,.... sometimes you just can't be sure.
This may or may not be what your fish have.

Antibiotics used as a dip, put into the water, or used in a food should
be used in full dose, otherwise you could/would be breeding super bugs
that become resistance to future treatments. Medicated foods should be
given at least 10 days.

Two reasons for red streaks - eather the ammonia or nitrite got really
high, in which case the gills would be somewhat fried (dark red -
unrepairable). Or, a systemic bacteria infection (gills would be more
pink/light red) in which case you should be doing 20% daily water
changes and feeding a medicater food at least twice a day for at least
10 days.

Hmmm, "misty scales" - tell me more, are these "misty scales" grouped
togeather or spotted over the body? If they discolor and then fall out,
it's a disease called myxosporidis (sp.) which is untreatable. If the
scales are white to gray, smeary looking and on spoted areas, it would
be more of a viruse (lymphocytosis). Two tsp salt should make it
disappear in a week. The only other thing I can think of would be
Oodinium - dry patchy looking skin, thick slime coat. A flashlight at
night will show the infected areas having a yellowish tinge. Best
treated with salt and QuickCure............. Frank

With soft water fish, to much salt will split fins and tails. High
nitrAtes and wide pH swings will also split fins and tails. White
stools is a symptom of a bacterial infection.

Hi, thanks sooo much for all your advice. Thought I would keep you all
updated now that the 'quickcure' treatment has finished.

My ryukin is doing well. Haven't noticed any 'thin white stools'. To
be honest, haven't seen any stools at all really. She is doing well
though. Swimming around the whole tank rather than the small area she
was occupying when she was sick. She has a few dull colour scales.
Hard to tell why as she is white. They just don't shine like the
others. Still, I am sooo happy to see her back to herself.

My fantail is the fittest and healthyist of the all. He is passing
normal stools again and is growing sooo big.

My black moor is passing normail stools again. Very happy. The white
'fungus' has gone. He is eating well and hardly resting on the bottom
anymore. Big improvement. I've noticed that some of his scales appear
to be more 'metalic' than black since the fungus has gone. Still very
pleased with him.

Then there is my baby. My pearlscale. He is much better in himself.
Stools are fine. Getting sooo big and eating like a horse. He is much
more active than when he was unwell. Unfortunatly he still has the red
streaks in his tail. Maybe even a few more. He does have me worried.

I fed the 'anti-bacterial' food for 8 days. It said 5 on the bottle so
took it a few days over till I ran out. We used the Furanase for 4
days then the quick cure for 3. I have been doing 50% water changed
every 2 days and adding 1 rounded tablespoon salt for every 5 gallons
of changed water. I am only using the salt as when using the Furanse I
noticed traces of nitrites. None since the salt. My nitrates were
slightly higher than normal (usally nothing. I think that this is
because the fish didn't like the anti-bacterial food and a lot of this
went to waste. I give the gravel a huge vacuuming when I change the
water. I am going to put the charcoal back in today to take the
quickcure out of the water.

Should I buy some more antibacterial food and start another course?
The water reading are doing well so now at a loss.
