Hi..
I've heard about pretty North American minnows of 3-4" maximum. Unfortunately I don't know their colloquial or scientific names. In a telephone call a friend told me about several other pretty small North American Cold-water Fish. Would like learn more about them. Thanks in advance. -- cu Marco |

Thanks in advance. ==================== One showed up in my tank of koi fry. It's about 4" long and very dark colored and active. When I sold the fingerlings this past Monday I left it there. I'll probably take it to the lake as soon as I have some bullfrogs to relocate. Or maybe I'll leave it for mosquito control. It has thrived in our hard alkaline water and inexpensive fish food. -- Koi-Lo.... Frugal ponding since 1995. Aquariums since 1952. *Note: There are two Koi-Lo's on the Aquaria Groups.* ~~~ }((((o ~~~ }{{{{o ~~~ }(((((o |

For an overview http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/tnhc/fish/na/naindex.html There is an organization dedicated to them: http://www.nanfa.org/ One that is frequently kept, but not so much in the US is: http://fins.actwin.com/nanf/month.9902/msg00205.html Another is the least killifish http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_H...ia_formosa.php Many of the small carp relatives can be kept in aquariums, many known as shiners http://www.cnr.vt.edu/efish/families/warpaint.html If you have a library than can get books, there is a book, "American Aquarium Fishes" by Robert J Goldstein that discusses a great many fish suitable for aquariums. |

please don't release the fish you got with the koi shipment. You never
know what it may be carrying, even if it is a native species. Toilet before release! |

There's the green sailfin molly, but it's not that much of a coldwater fish and could not survive german winters. the same goes for the Gambusia mosquitofish. Tough as nails, but it might not make it in European ponds. Gambusia have been introduced to many areas outside their home range in the southern US, and have come to be thought as a pest species responsible for environmental destruction. -E |
